Special Series on Apostasy: There's no better time than Ramadan

Saeed Raageh, a Somali sheikh in North America, admitted:

Studies were done on the situation of Muslims [in North America], specifically three groups: Iranians, Afghans and Somalis. These three groups have been surveyed in 2014, 2017 and 2018 – in all these years they were studied.

They say the fastest growing religion everywhere is Islam. Do you know how many leave the religion and how many embrace it? What do you think? Compared to Christianity, they estimated in 2014 that 23% left Christianity. 23% left Christianity. They gained – going in – they gained, six percent. Those are finished.

Now they turned to the Muslims. They asked, how many Muslims leave the religion. They said—let me first give you the good news—they said 23% embraced the religion. 23% embrace it. The percentage of Muslims who leave the religion is 23%. The percentage is—please read the studies, seek it, go and Google it! In 2014 the Muslim kids, especially the youth—23% were leaving the religion in 2014.

They repeated (the survey) in 2017.

24% were leaving (Islam). I mean, suppose this city had ten thousand residents, it’s a quarter of them! It is a quarter that leaves! Every year, 24% leave the religion. It is… It is a calamity! The highest, as I said, is the Iranians. Second come the Afghans, then Somalis. The Somalis! Our kids harbour doubts.

In a tour, other preachers and I went to the UK, and we were touring the UK for da’wah. We gave sermons in seven cities and have been to seventeen [Islamic] centres. The only point we were focussing on is how we can remove the religious doubts from our kids.

I tell you, those apostatising and leaving the religion are not those in Canada you hear on Fox News or CNN shooting one another. Those leaving the religion are kids raised in mosques, then were sent to colleges. It is those cream of the crop, the best of the best, who graduated from the universities, who are apostatising. The ones who kill did not apostatise. The thief did not apostatise. The drunkard did not apostatise. Those who otherwise became bad did not apostatise. The ones who apostatise are the boys and girls who went to university.

“Calamity”, “tsunami”, “avalanche” – this is the vocabulary Muslims need if they want to talk about the state of their glorious ummah today. The most important thing about this sheikh’s speech, and that nobody seems to have picked up on, is neither the rate of apostasy nor that it was a sheikh who admitted it, but that this sheikh had committed a very serious sin without even realising it. Instead of consulting an Islamic authority higher than himself, he had preferred the authority of the unbelievers. He had consulted facts, scientific surveys, real statistics, and infidel sources. Instead of the ubiquitous "Allah knows best", the sheikh is asserting, by his own choice, that infidels know best (which is true, of course, but that is another matter). He prefers scientific, i.e., infidel authority over the divine and unquestionable authority of Allah. Shari'a strictly forbids any criticism of Islam, whether directly or implied.

Allah Most High says, "One of My servants reaches daybreak a believer, another an unbeliever. He who says, 'We have received rain by Allah's grace,' is a believer in Me and a disbeliever in the planets. But he who says, 'We have received rain by the effects of such and such a mansion of the moon,' is an unbeliever in Me and a believer in planets”. (Reliance of the Traveller, Book p41.2(2))

It is true that the passage pertains to astrology, but at that time, astrology was science.

For Muslims to live in the world of the unbelievers without first having subjugated them by the sword, is to slowly imbibe the ways of the unbelievers. It happens without their realising it. Sheikh Raageh is a good example of this. He sees in the youth what he fails to see in himself. The sheikh does not advise the killing of the doubting children, even though Allah, who knows best, advises it:

So they [Moses and Khidr] twain journeyed on till, when they met a lad, he slew him. (Moses) said: What! Hast thou slain an innocent soul who hath slain no man? Verily thou hast done a horrid thing. ...[Khidr explained] And as for the lad, his parents were believers and we feared lest he should oppress them by rebellion and disbelief. And we intended that their Lord should change him for them for one better in purity and nearer to mercy. (Qur’an 18:74, 80-81)

And the Shari’a indemnifies it: “The following are not subject to retaliation: a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring's offspring.” (Reliance of the Traveller, Book 01.2(4)).

Even if it can be argued that Allah only advices parents to kill their children whom they fear might “oppress them by rebellion and disbelief”; he does not command them to do so, it is curious that the sheikh simply does not mention this at all, despite its being a great many parents who are right now actually “oppressed” by their children’s “rebellion and disbelief.” The sheikh does not say how many preachers were involved in trying to solve the problem of youth doubt in Islam, but one can assume that none of them stood by Allah and his “Sacred Law”. The harsh justice of the desert barbarian is no longer to their taste. They have become what Mohammed Hijab calls, "weaklings and imbeciles, never real Muslims in the first place."

It is precisely this kind of enfeeblement of Islam that spurs more committed Muslims, such as Sayyed Qutb, Hassan el-Banna, Osama bin Laden, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and so many others, to be the bloody hand by which Allah restores Islam to its rightful glory as dominant over all others. The Muslims who distance themselves from such people are at the same time both too Muslim and not Muslim enough. It makes for a deeply unhappy people and all the socio-pathologies that flow from that.

This Somali sheikh cares very deeply for his ummah, that much is clear. But Islam corrupts this perfectly healthy human emotion into a conflation of loyalty with truth that becomes indistinguishable in the Muslim mind. Because the sheikh can no longer simply tell lay Muslims “Your iman is weak; you must hear and obey!” as most sheikhs still do, because that is all that they know, the ways of the kufaar have touched the humanity of this sheikh and he can no longer lie to Muslims, at least, not as before. He sought knowledge from “the planets” and imparted what he had learnt onto his congregation. At the same time, he did lie by omission. He neglected to inform his congregation that Allah recommends they kill their children. Of course, most of his congregation would not care for Allah’s opinion on this matter.

A gap has appeared between loyalty and truth, making them two different things in the mind of this sheikh, as well as in the minds of his Western Muslim congregation. Whether the sheikh realises it or not, this is how the journey out of Islam begins. When he finally realises it, it will be a shattering experience, one filled with deep disappointment and self-disgust at having spent years not only as a Muslim, but as an active defender of Islam, even lying to Muslims in a monumental abuse of trust.

Lying to your ummah, lying to your wife/husband, beating your wife, killing your own children and grandchildren – being bad is built-in to being Muslim. This is why Sheikh Saeed Raageh found that only the killers, the thieves, the drunkards, the bad people and the uneducated stick with Islam. The rest get out.

Those who remain in Islam, according to the sheikh, are incapable of empathy, and feel kindness towards no one. The human inside them is dead. Islam killed it. They are commanded to hate and distrust all others and they do. Those still capable of human emotions live with their perverted humanity. Muslims women swooned in ecstasy at the sight of Jewish women gang-raped, having their breasts cut off and shot in the head, all in front of their families and friends. These are the people who remain in Islam. Fathers and mothers praise the sons who report to them in uncontrollable excitement that they have killed ten Jews with their own hands. These are the people who remain in Islam. Crowds of Muslims descend on Western cities to declare that “from the river to the sea,” their barbaric murdering heroes “shall be free”. These are the people who remain in Islam. And then come the nice Muslims, the ever-so-friendly Muslims, the ever-so-helpful Muslims, who say to non-Muslims, "Don't look at those people; they are not Muslims. What they do is not Islam." These are the people who remain in Islam, too cowardly to be honest even with themselves. In Ramadan, especially, their guilt gets to them.

If you can leave Islam during Ramadan, in the face of family, friends, tradition, culture and all that you've been taught, then you will have passed the toughest test an apostate will ever face. There will be little chance that Allah could haul you back, as he did Mufassil Islam, and your new-found freedom will have a secure footing. And if you have recently left Islam, congratulations, and welcome to freedom. Guard it well. There are others who would take it away from you.
